Protrude, flow by Sachiko Kodama + Minako Takeno made in 2001 is a physical material that makes it easy for humans to create surreal illusions in pictures. Protrude, Flow is an interactive installation which expresses the dynamics of fluid motion of physical material, the dynamics of organic, wild shapes and movements of liquid by a computer control. Protrude, flow uses material, sound, and moving images. Sounds affect the way it works, and the three-dimensional patterns of the magnetic fluid transform in various ways. Its flowing movement and transformations are shown on a wide screen.
The fluid appears black. It is made by dissolving ferro magnetic micro-powder in a solvent such as water or oil. It is flexibly transformable than iron sand and it is possible to create more complex three-dimensional organic patterns.
The magnetic transformations occur because of interaction with environmental sound. The sound is caught by a microphone hanging in the ceiling, than a computer converts the sound amplitude to electromagnetic voltage which determines the strength of the magnetic field. Each pattern appears synchronized to the sound and the points of the shape move as well with the pattern. As a result the fluid pulsates.
This interaction can help show human emotions. They are not machine like objects but act like it is because of the pulsating fluid. It helps create things to become surreal.
