Slow Design Principles Project Ideas

1. Reveal

The concept for a piece that I came up with for Reveal is a tea party set. Withing the tea cups there is a image of a cityscape. When filling up the teacups or pot with water, the cityscape would change colors. I decided to use this idea because the Reveal concept talks about things in everyday life that are often missed or forgotten. Many people by silverware based on the practicality as well as the aesthetics. After purchasing something that is used in everyday life, the object’s aesthetic aspect is often forgotten and is only used for the practicality. When using this tea set, the changes in color would be based on heat. When filling the cups, it would be almost impossible to not notice the change.

2.Expand

The idea for a project that I have for this concept is a revolving door with a merry-go-round display in the center. When looking at a revolving door some people may think that it is a hassle to walk through them. As a child, I was always intrigued with revolving doors. Not everyone finds a revolving door pleasing too look at like me. By adding a merry-go-round display, it gives off a sense of nostalgia to those that walk through the doors. It would be a little off to see a grown man on a merry-go-round, so it would be better the have one as a display. The functionality of a revolving doors seems to be practical, while at the same time it is also plain, by adding a display in the center, it would be more aesthetically pleasing to look at a revolving door. 

3. Reflect

An idea for a project for this concept that I thought of is a tree. It is not a ordinary tree, but a robotic tree. Many couples would engrave their initials on a tree, meaning that it would last forever, however, that is not true in some cases. Similar to posting something on social media, it is hard to completely delete something. In this case, the tree would do the same, like engraving initials, it would just be typing and a picture. After a period of time, people would be able to view the image and the initials. This concept is meant for reflection, in this case, after a couple breaks up, they would still be able to see the image and reflect. The design of the tree would be the same as a tree in nature however, there would just a screen for viewing.

4.Engage

A project that would fit for this concept would a large scale cutout of a flower. This would require collaboration between others. When each person holds up a petal to a flower, it would light up. Everyone must be holding up a petal or else the petal would not like up. The engage concept requires people to work together in order for the project to work. The idea if the project can evolve. People can contribute different designs and create new ones. the project does not require a open mind but a collaborative effort from others. 

5.Participate

The concept for this project would be a event. People would draw a image onto a sheet of paper. They will then put the sheet in a mini hot air balloon. the design would illuminate through the balloon and shine. In this project people would have to actively participate. There are many festival around the world that have to do with lanterns as well as lights in the sky. By combining these two and adding another creative aspect to this it would be something that people would enjoy. This concept would happen in local areas or non urban areas. Although events like festivals are for everyone to enjoy, having too much people would make the project lose intimacy and locality. 

6. Evolve

An idea for this concept would be a sapling. This sapling is not just any sapling, but a sapling that lights up in response to the carbon levels. People do not realize that they are one of the main factors why there is so much pollution today. Even though there are efforts to stop pollution, it will not change by a lot. People also do not appreciate nature as much today because they are too focused on their everyday life. When looking at the sapling, it would mean more that something that is growing, the color that if emits would also mean that there is still a issue that needs to be brought up and solved.
