I started with a really organic model and wanted to see the result of compressing that emotional state into a little over 100 vertices. It’s interesting to see what edges or shapes were preserved while the little details and wrinkles got ironed out.

This was the result of the laser cut I made. Because of the thickness of the material, I think a lot of the geometry got distorted and as I added more pieces the distortion grew. Eventually I ended up tearing some pieces so I had to stop gluing them together.
Also, I ended up using blender to create the flat fold. While not as advanced of a tool, I did have more control over the seams that were created and I think it made the assembly process much more straight forward. Sadly the dashed lines were lost and I had to manually score every fold.

This is what the pieces had on them. Not only are they numbered, the reference which island (ex: I13:6) which immensely speeds up the production. They also mark which cuts are convex/concave, another added bonus. The only problem is that you can’t account for the thickness of the material, and overlapping geometry have a weird behavior.
