Assignment 1: Interior Anatomy 3D Print

For my 3D print, I found a house I split into two halves and the inside reveals a little alien fetus. When trying to come up with an idea, I thought of the different ways I could show the inside of an object while keeping it printable and readable as the interior of the object. I first considered just a cross-section of a house, but decided why not make two parts and actually have an interior ‘interior.’ A womb seemed fitting for a home and I figured it would be easily recognizable in a 3D print versus a lumpy mass of exposed organs, all one color. I searched for a 3D model of a house that wasn’t too detailed or an architectural model and settled for this simple symmetric ‘fairy house.’ I made a hole in each half and a small square peg ~5mm wide at the top to hold the two parts together. For the fetus, I found a flat model whose shape I liked and extruded it out to make a fully 3D form to fit inside with a little spiky alien tail. I made the peg a fraction smaller than the hole it was supposed to go into to make sure it fit once printed. However, I still had to sand it down once I got my print. It fits now, but it’s a little wobbly. My thinking for the square peg was that the shape would fit snugly and keep from rotating around. This way I could get away with only one peg. If I were to go back, I’d either make two pegs to keep it in place, or try a wider and flatter peg, like a tab. I think I would also move the fetus form further into the hole so only half of it was showing. This might help the supports be more manageable to remove. I ended up breaking off the alien’s little arm by accident.
