Homework: Laser Engraving – Digi-Plaques

For my laser engraving, I chose to engrave four of my own designs onto wood. These designs were originally used for an anthotype process where chemicals are painted onto paper and the designs are then printed on top using a hot lamp. They usually would have come out in a blue and white color and were in the form of small collectable cards. However, this process was not perfect and the full image would sometimes not print out properly, with parts of the image appearing to be faded. In turn, I wanted to reuse the designs and see just how well and accurate the laser engraver could print them out onto a different material, in the end, they turned out with full detail. These designs are abstract imagery of various subjects and have titles which include: 1. Maze, 2. Skyline, 3. astroid, and 4. arrival. These designs are inspired by circuit boards and mimic that of its traces and nodes. because of this, they are all created with simple geometric shapes such as squares and circles. the original idea was to continue making small collectable cards however, this plaque design turned out much better and can be seen as something to be hung on a wall, which inspired me to continue this series. below are the results and inspiration behind each design.

1. Maze (4.5in x 4.5in, wood): this was the first design in this abstract series inspired heavily by circuit boards and maps which is something that I tend to create a lot of in my own work.

2. Skyline (4.5in x 4.5in, wood): Skylines are very aesthetically pleasing no matter the city or place that the picture is taken in, Chicago in my opionion has one of the best skylines out there which, as someone who lives close by the lake, can always enjoy and take in that view almost all the time. this one is my own take of an abstract city.

3. Astroid (4.5in x 4.5in, wood): Because I was working with minimal shapes, I turned to that of classic retro games such as astroids where an arrow shaped space ship shoots out lasers, destroying any astroids coming torwards its way.

4. Arrival (4.5in x 4.5in, wood): Arrival is a reference to the movie by the same title, it’s about two scientists who are tasked with communicating with aliens on board an oval shaped spaceship. I wanted to simplify its original movie poster down to focus on these two scientists and the spaceship.
