This is my engraving for Homework #3, which I call “Scorpien”.

I chose this image of my own drawing because I wanted to see more of my designs in different artforms. In addition, I though it would be cool to see the electricity of the creature be the engraved portion of the image, so that the electricity stands out more than it does in a black-and-white drawing.

After processing the image in illustrator with image tracing, the result is almost exactly the same, although this is likely due to the simplicity of the drawing.
The first result is an engraving of size 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches in clear acrylic. Overall, I like that the engraving retains the bumpy, curved lines of the original images. However, my original plan was to use glow-in-the-dark acrylic for this piece, which was unfortunately unavailable. Of course, I still believe that a brighter/fluorescent acrylic would work better for this drawing. Even so, I like how well the design transferred from drawing to engraving, with practically no sacrifice in image detail.

The second and third results are engravings of size 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches on both dark blue felt and light blue paper. Overall, I like the difference in color between the lines and the background for the light blue paper engraving, although I prefer the darker blue of the felt for this specific design. Finally, I enjoy the differences between the three works, despite the fact that they’re displaying the exact same design.
